How to Adopt

Animal Adoption Information

Our paramount objective is the welfare of all animals that arrive at Cabanita with the view to rehoming all. We lovingly care for each and every animal and once we have determined that an animal is suitable for adoption. We do adhere to a quite strict adoption process. This is both for the benefit of prospective adoptees and of course the security and continued welfare of the animals.
All potential adoptees must complete a registration form which does include personal information.

Note that we only rehome animals as family pets and under no circunstances as working or guard dogs.

We often make follow-up enquiries, even visits on our adoptions and encourage adoptees to keep in touch with us detailing their experiences together with any appropriate photos and/or videos.

How does animal adoption work?

Take a look through our Animals for Adoption and find one that you think you can give a permanent home to. Use the adoption form to let us know which Animal you are interested in. We will contact you to arrange a visit if we have any suitable animals.

Are there any adoption requirements?

The simple answer is YES. Every adoption application form submitted is thoroughly checked. We must have confidence that the person adopting any of our Animals has the right profile and conditions to take care of them.

How to avoid picking the wrong pet?

Taking a new friend into your home can involve a major change in your personal circumstances and normal life. We understand this can be difficult for new owners. If youโ€™re worried about these kinds of issues, please get in touch for guidance on your individual animal.

Are pets for adoption healthy?

All our animals are sterilized (except young puppies and kittens), vaccinated and have been tested for diseases such as Leish, heart worm and tick fever. If need, they can receive a vet checkup before they join you. All this is done at the expense of the adoption shelter, but only if there are doubts about their health status.

What does it mean to adopt a rescue dog?

Adoption is the process through which someone absorbs full responsibility for a dog or any other type of pet. Since these are rescue dogs, there is a wide variety of personalities on show, with some dogs already coming house-trained and able to perform basic tricks, and others who have never even set foot in a home.

Making sure its what you want

While we would love to promote as many people as we could to adopt an animal, we also like to make certain that the new adopter is capable of ensuring that that animal has a good life. It is important for someone adopting an animal to realise that it is not just property; it is a new member of your family.

No matter how passionate you may be, it is imperative that you have adequate time, space and money to take care of your animal. Visits to the vet and occasional emergencies will occur and you should be prepared to cover these costs.

An animal is not a replacement for something for you have lost in your life, nor is it something that you can just give attention to whenever you want; it is something which will require some effort every single day, for the rest of their life. Please carefully consider what you are doing when you take this animal. It is a life, not a toy.

Taking care of your new pet

Furthermore, you should be ready to meet other expenses such as grooming, treats and a healthy diet of dog food. While some human foods like chicken and rice may be occasionally good for the dog, there are some which are poisonous to them.

We prefer to feed our dogs high protein, grain-free, dry food. We recommend this as grain can be detrimental to a dogs health, as can overfeeding. In conclusion, please make sure that should you want to adopt a dog, you are knowingly going to need to spend money on it, and treat it with the care and love that it deserves.
