Soon, one of the biggest sanctuaries for dogs and cats in Portugal will be born in the Algarve. The foundations of our shelter’s construction have already been laid!
At Animal Rescue Algarve sanctuary we are committed to restore faith and hope on the way Man treats animal life. We pursuit the dream of creating an animal sanctuary that will prove to be the last stronghold for 600 animals. Our mission is to provide assistance with the greatest ethics and promptness, to provide quality of life with dignity, and endeavour to find the right family for every rescued animal.
Our newly built facilities will have the capacity to house approximately 100 dogs and 20 cats, divided into three different locations, providing them food, safe shelter, veterinarian monitoring, training, socialisation, and the quality of life with the dignity they deserve. All 3 locations will be attended 24/7 with permanent surveillance.
«Cabanita», The first phase of the Animal Rescue Algarve project, is set up with a 5 acres and will be 100% up and running by August. In this first stage, we will be able to house around 200 animals (dogs and cats).
And because the Animal Rescue Algarve sanctuary would not be viable without volunteers, our association also provides high-quality facilities to house national and international volunteers, who might be available to spend a few weeks or months with us, contributing with local work. Also we have the state-of-the-art quality of accommodation for our animals, with eco-friendly construction materials and systems developed to maximise their comfort and recovery.
We deeply believe that together we can make a difference and bring a positive change into this worrying scenario in the Algarve. We can help towards the solution for many cases of animal neglect, mistreatment, abandonment. We do not spare efforts to help all of those in need: old or young, big or small, mixed or pure breed, and our commitment is to try to find the best owner for each and every animal.
It is estimated that there are at least 10,000 abandoned animals alone in the Algarve region and the lack of answers for them is truly worrying. Saving lives, just as the one of the dog we found lying in a dumpster, left to die with a broken leg, but that we managed to rescue in time, operate, or the case of the chained dog left to survive without food or water over the his own excrement, are just two of the many harsh realities we face every day, but that we are prepared to face! We refuse to be indifferent as all lives are precious.
After the rescue, medical and veterinary care and human observation, the goal is to relocated the animal as soon as possible in a permanent home. So we have a diligent team working closely with several Portuguese, English, Dutch, Belgian and German entities.

Here at ARA, our mission is to help abandoned and sick animals in the Algarve. We want to rescue, provide veterinary treatment, neuter, socialize and re-home as many animals as we can.
It is estimated that there are up to 10,000 abandoned animals in the Algarve region – the following is our immediate response to this serious issue.
ARA has initiated the construction of one of a possible three rescue centres, which is currently located near to Loulé. Once completed, it will be able to house, at the very least, 80 dogs in fully insulated buildings with food, water, heat lamps, and blankets. Another 2 shelters are in the plans for construction.
It is also our aim to help educate and inform the local population of the need to neuter, and care properly for animals. We don’t just plan on fighting the issue with stray and abused animals, we wish to resolve it entirely. The only way we can do that is with the help and support of you, your donations, and with the education for the people who cause this situation.
Our Animal Rescue Algarve Centres will have pleasant reception areas to receive people who have contacted us to visit on adoption days, which are currently Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.
The animal shelters will have accommodation for our permanent staff and also for volunteers who wish to work with animals. There will be 24-hour surveillance 7 days per week. No expense or effort will be spared in making sure we have happy animals all ready for adoption.
When we have a healthy happy animal ready for adoption we have a diligent team working closely with several Portuguese and international organisations for safe re-homing.

For your information
This is a voluntary Animal Rescue Association only made possible by the generous sponsors and volunteers. As of yet, all of the capital spend on the animals has come from contributions towards the charity, as we currently have no assistance from the local council or government. The majority of the work carried out by the lawyers, accountants and committee members towards this rescue centre has been of a voluntary nature. Payment to our volunteer staff is minimal, with accommodation being provided by one of our sponsors.
What People Say
Straight to the goal!
Two friends of mine in the Algarve have financed the creation of two much needed shelters for abandoned and distressed animals. Have at look at Animal Rescue Algarve website to check out their excellent work.

A good cause in a great location. It would seem that the situation in Portugal and the Algarve in respect to the treatment of Animals is somewhat behind the likes of the UK and most other European countries. This Charity aims to better the situation both for animals and organisers. A really good Organisation that deserves our support.

I’m happy to be a part of this!
Having met the people and seen the organisation behind this Animal Rescue Sanctuary I could not fail to be impressed. I will gladly give my support to the project and offer any help that is physically possible on my behalf. The synopsis is not only to help the animals but also to bring awareness to both residents and those in power alike. We need more of this type of setup worldwide. Help to set the ball rolling, I as one certainly will be.
I can but envy the dedication behind this Charity and the people who are involved. The commitment on a daily basis is second to none, remembering the workers are volunteers and are giving up their spare time to be a part of this great cause. They have my recommendation and support as a professional in the same field and wish them every success.
