ARA Monthly Update – June 2025

Another Month of Compassion, Commitment & Change

As summer kicks into full swing, June has been another powerful month of action and impact here at ARA. From adoptions and rescues to school events, supermarket campaigns, and a national rescue operation, we’ve seen the very best of what our community can do when we come together for the animals.

📊 By the Numbers – June 2025

  • 27 Adoptions 🐶🐱

  • 29 Rescues 🚨

  • 133 Sterilisations 🏥

Each number represents a life changed, a future rewritten, and another step forward in our mission.

❤️ Adoption Highlights

  • Floopy: After spending 10 years dragging his hind legs due to a spinal issue, and 5 years in our care, Floopy has found his forever home. Even more touching? His new family previously adopted Simão, a dog in the final stage of life. Floopy will now receive all the love and care he deserves.

  • Maria: Our lovely Maria, who spent 5 years at the shelter, has finally been adopted. Her patience and resilience have paid off, and we’re overjoyed to see her begin a new chapter.

🚨 Rescue Stories

  • Feeling: A 4-month-old puppy shot in the spine by gypsies, Feeling arrived at ARA dragging his back legs. Thanks to a specialist neurosurgery team in Lisbon, he’s had surgery and is waiting on a custom-fit wheelchair. Despite his trauma, he radiates joy — a true little fighter.

  • Jack: Rescued from a clinic where he was due to be euthanised due to neglect, Jack is now on the road to recovery. Thanks to the clinic staff who knew about ARA’s work, he was given a second chance.

🐾 Community Events – June Round-Up

Pet Day @ Vale do Lobo

  • Held on 1st, 15th & 29th June by Sandbanks Restaurant. As always, our adorable pups and kittens were a big hit with visitors!

Kiwoko (Portimão)

  • 7th & 8th June: Kiwoko remains one of our top contributors of food and quality donations. We’re incredibly grateful for their continued support.

Continente & Tienda Animal (Alcantarilha)

  • 21st June: For the first time, ARA collected food and supplies at Continente and Tienda Animal in Alcantarilha. Thanks to these new partnerships, we received much-needed donations for the shelter.

Children’s Day – Almancil

  • Once again invited by the Almancil School Group, ARA joined celebrations at Jardim das Comunidades. We had dogs up for adoption, ARA merch, and the opportunity to share our mission with families and children.

WOOFF at Aspire International School

  • ARA’s charity shop WOOFF joined the second-hand market at Aspire International School. It was a fantastic day for awareness, sales, and sharing the impact WOOFF has in funding our rescue work.

🐕 National Impact: 70 Animals Rescued from State Kennel

In what’s being called a landmark moment in Portugal, 70 mistreated animals were removed from an unfit municipal kennel in Foz Côa. This mega rescue, carried out by over 40 operatives, resulted in the kennel’s immediate closure.

We hope this sets a precedent for future action. Sadly, there is still a state-sponsored shelter less than 20 minutes from ARA housing over 400 dogs with insufficient staff. Despite national exposure a year ago, it remains unchanged. We will continue to advocate for those without a voice.

📣 ARA in the Media

We were proud to be featured in MAPRO’s June magazine, highlighting the exceptional standards of care and rehabilitation at ARA. It’s always encouraging to see our work recognised and shared across the Algarve and beyond.
